Moody 66

This flagship of the Moody fleet has all the dynamic capabilities necessary for the most serious blue water cruising. She also has the accommodation including a skipper's cabin, for seven people to live in comfort yet, with fully-powered sail handling, can be sailed by just two crew. In port she's a pleasure, but it's at sea where the Moody 66 shows her true qualities. Sailing her is a revelation.

Hull Construction
Hand laid up glass reinforced plastic. The
laminate is a cored sandwich structure
comprising glass filament mats and polyester
resins with pigmented gel coat finishes.
Two applications of hand brushed isophalic gel
coat (Scott Bader enhanced Optima) with a
choice of pigmented hull topside finish in white,
dark blue. Gel coats are checked for thickness
prior to the application of the first laminate.
Initial lay-up also in isophalic resin combining
with powder bound mats. The hull laminate
with DCPD modified orthophalic polyester resin
is a modern composite structure of varying layups
and mat configurations to match the hull
panel analysis. The hull core comprises 25mm
end grain balsa put down on a polyester core
bonding paste for maximum skin adhesion. The
sandwich structure gives increased panel
stiffness associated with weight savings to
optimise the yacht's centre of gravity. The
underwater sections from midships forwards
are further stiffened by utilizing an Aramid
(Kevlar) bi- directional 0/90 laminate to increase
underwater impact resistance.
Hull stiffening is a complex mix of glassed in
floors and stringers through the keel bay and
main bilge area, plus structural bulkheads and
chain plate supports. Structural bulkheads are
bonded in and through bolted to the bonding
flange. Structural support is also provided in the
forward and after ends by bonded in tray
mouldings creating flange and girder section
support. Keel floors are moulded down into a
deep keel sump. All structural areas in way of
the keel box and holes cut through the laminate
for skin fittings, transducers and under water
appendages are in solid laminate. Ring floors
carry chain plate loadings through the hull floor
and are slot bonded to the main bulkhead. The
transom is stiffened for the option to fit davits at
a later date.

Floor structures are a combination of foam
cored floor girders through the keel floor area,
over-laminated with bi-directional stitched mats
to maximise the modulus of rigidity. Floors
through the mast heel area are hardwood cored
with over-bonding as above to carry the mast
compression loadings.
Bulkheads are structurally bonded to the hull
skin and the underside of deck and coach roof
with 100mm of glass bonding on both surfaces
plus through bolting at 225mm spacings. Aft
saloon bulkhead, forward saloon bulkhead and
aft skippers cabin bulkhead are foam cored to
give high panel stiffness and are designed to
counter the hydrostatic loadings of watertight
compartments if the yacht is required to be
MCA compliant.

Deck Structure
Hand lay up in glass fibre. Flat areas of the deck
and coachroof are balsa cored for good panel
stiffness and to improve insulation using 20mm
end grain balsa, 140kg per cubic metre density.
Vertical faces are cored with 12mm balsa of the
same density. Load bearing areas within the
deck where fittings and fastenings are fixed, the
balsa core is replaced with 20mm or 12mm
marine plywood to the depth of the surrounding
core. Inner and outer skins of the deck
sandwich are laid up with chopped strand mat
in way of re-enforcing pads and the inner skin is
increased to laminate thickness. The ring deck
(side, aft and fore deck) plus forward and after
coachroof are laid with a solid swept teak deck.
Major deck beams in way of the coachroof,
mast and mainsheet areas have additional
stiffening in the form of carbon fibre tapes
running the full length of the moulded
beam.Hull To Deck Joint
The hull is moulded with a return flange onto
which the deck is landed; the transom is an
integrally moulded part of the hull moulding.
The deck is bonded to the hull flange and also
mechanically fastened. The deck edge bulwark
is then fitted with a laminated teak cap rail. The
cap rail is stopped off and capped in way of the
two spring cleats per side, stanchions are fixed
to be bonded in under deck stainless steel
support spigots.

The cockpit is split into two sections, the steering
positions and a step down between the twin
helm positions to the crew/guest cockpit.
From the helm position there is excellent
access to the main deck either up a central step
to the aft coachroof area or outboard of each
helm, a single step over the coaming to the side
The helmsman's cockpit contains two custom
GRP binnacles mounting two 42" Whitlock
Commodore wheels.
Both binnacles have Plastimo Olympic 135
steering compasses and both binnacle seats
have stainless backrests with upholstered rolled
sections. Two stainless cup holders are
provided adjacent to the helm seats. The port
binnacle contains all engine controls.
engine gauges and switches are mounted in
custom panel fitted into the binnacle together
with carling switches for operation
panel/compass lights, deck lights and operation
of the hydraulic transom door. On the coaming
adjacent to this panel is mounted the control
the 15hp Sleipner bowthruster and a single
lever MMC Mathers electronic gear control.
This is a 'fly by wire' system allowing smooth
and easy operation of the gearshift. The
standard boat is set up to be driven under
power from the port binnacle.

thruster controls to the starboard coaming
alongside the binnacle.
The starboard binnacle duplicates the carling
switches from the port binnacle and also
contains the navigational equipment in the form
of a Raymarine 6001 autopilot control and
second Raymarine 240E VHF handset are also
fitted at this binnacle. Both helm seats have
upholstered cushions to match the upholstered
rolls fitted to the stainless backrests.
Adjacent to the starboard helm in the coaming
is the Navtec control panel with manual pump,
which is fed from the Lewmar Commander
allowing switchable operation for the vang and

- Various pod options are available allowing
radar and instrumentation to be fitted to a
kickback rail at the binnacle.
Lewmar 30 CST winches are mounted inboard
of the helm seats with Lewmar 60mm racing
foot blocks allowing full control of the
mainsheet traveller system.
The guest/crew cockpit contains a permanent
fixed table with a solid teak top and two folding
leaves. Incorporated into the design of the
table are stainless grabs at the forward and
end. The aft grab is extended up and kicked fwd
to mount a Raymarine E80 LCD colour
radar/plotter repeater, linked to the master
Raymarine E120 unit at the chart area. A drinks
locker with lift out lid in the centre table section.
A teak grating covers the cockpit drains, which
are 50mm, allowing fast draining of the cockpit

A Yanmar 4 LHA-STE Turbo charged fourcylinder
diesel engine of 230 horsepower
(169kw) is fitted with a ZF-Hurth marine
gearbox, which has a reduction ratio of 2.68:1.
The engine is wired for 24 volts and is fitted
with 1 off 175amp and 1 off 35amp alternators.
The engine is secondary circuit cooled with
freshwater by means of an engine driven
coolant pump, heat extracted from the engine is
transferred via an engine mounted heat
exchanger to the primary seawater circulating
system. The raw water inlet is fitted with a
clear-topped filter, and after cooling the sealed
freshwater system is injected into the exhaust.
The exhaust system is runs through a muffler
pot and separator manufactured in GRP by
Halyard Marine to reduce engine noise levels..
This separates the water from the exhaust
gases, the exhaust gases being blown out via a
swan neck through the deadrise of the transom
and water being expelled below the waterline in
way of the engine compartment.
The standard engine instruments are fitted to
the port binnacle. These include the standard
alarms supplied with the Yanmar 'C' type panel
i.e. oil pressure, temperature, alarm mute and
engine battery charging, with an additional
warning light for the second alternator and a rev
counter, hour meter, oil pressure and
temperature gauges. Also incorporated into this
panel is a warning light and buzzer for the
service batteries.
Engine control is through a Mathers MMC single
lever control mounted on the port coaming. This
is an electronic 'fly by wire' system allowing
smooth and precise engine control.


Saloon: Large C shaped settee to port side
with storage space beneath. Extending leaf
dining table with decorative veneer tabletop
with removable stainless steel fiddles. 2
Directors chairs provide additional seating to
starboard side of the table. Built in 2-seater
sofa to starboard side with drawer space
beneath. Outboard of the settee and sofa are
top storage lockers. The furniture outboard of
the sofa houses the flat screen television.
DVD/audio system mounted to port complete
with CD storage rack. Large fore and aft and
forward facing windows plus hull topsides
portlights light the saloon area. Opening deck
hatches and dorade vents give ventilation, the
topsides ports can be opening if specified.


Step down and aft to
Navigation area: Generous navigation desk
with chart storage beneath the lid. Drawer
space below chart table. The furniture units
incorporate space for navigation displays.
Electrical distribution board built into the
furniture opposite the chart table area. Wet
hanging locker aft of the chart table seat. A
comprehensive tool drawer is fitted complete
with tools below the navigator's seat.
Door aft to
Office: Situated aft of the navigation area, the
study gives access to the owner's cabin.
Leather topped desk space is provided with a
seat. Space is provided within the locker units
for an optional icemaker. A foldaway
sea/occasional berth hinges out from the
furniture with additional paper chart stowage in
the base. One door provides primary access to
the engine room.


Door aft to
Owner's stateroom: Large centreline double
berth with deep drawer beneath. Twin curved
seats flowing away from the berth with curved
fronted lockers above. Generous hanging
space to both port and starboard. Drawer and
locker units with fiddled tops both port and
starboard below hull portlight.
Forward bulkhead, a fitted vanity unit with a
large electro lift mirror above behind which is
mounted the aft cabin flat screen television.
Light and ventilation are provided by two
opening deck hatches, four opening portlights
and two hull portlights, fixed but with the option
to specify opening.
Door to
Owner's toilet compartment: En-suite to the
owner's cabin, the compartment comprises a
separate shower stall complete with hinging door.
Wash hand basin with mirror and locker space
behind. Vacuflush electric freshwater toilet.
There are also two removable engine room
access panels.
Primary guest cabin: Situated forward of the
saloon to the port side. Large offset double
berth with deep storage drawers beneath.
Hanging locker, vanity corner desk and topside
locker all providing additional storage. Opening
deck hatch together with topside port light
give light and ventilation.
Door to
En-suite toilet: Private to the primary guest
cabin, the compartment includes a separate
shower stall complete with hanging door. Wash
hand basin with mirror and locker space.

Skipper's cabin: Two single berths, fitted to

Option skipper's toilet and shower: Situated
forward of the secondary guest cabin, fitted
with manual toilet, shower tray, pull out
washbasin with integrated shower/tap faucet
and storage/locker unit. All interior surfaces are
finished in white laminate.


From saloon, step down aft starboard to
Galley: Large U-shaped galley one step down
from the saloon area. Twin galley sinks
integrated into the Avonite galley worktop.
Large stainless steel front opening refrigerator
with two doors, one to the main refrigerator
area with a second door to the chilled wine
bottle rack. Stainless steel top opening freezer.
Refrigerator and freezer cooled by separate DC
powered, water cooled compressors.


Navigation Instruments

Supplied by Selden Masts. The rig
configuration is a cutter rigged masthead
arrangement with white painted aluminium
spars. The rig geometry utilizes triple aft swept
spreaders with cap shrouds, upper and lower
intermediates, aft lower shrouds, forestay, inner
forestay and backstay. The standard
configuration includes running backstays to
offset the inner forestay loadings. There is an
option have diamond jumper struts in addition,
to save using the running backstays in light airs.
Running rigging comprises mainsail, yankee and
staysail halliards terminating on Antal halliard
adjuster tracks on the mast, with one
interchangeable tail led back to the cockpit.
Mainsail clew outhaul and self-tacking staysail
sheet, which runs through the mast, are led aft
to cockpit. Mast is keel stepped, the heel fitting
landing on a stainless steel shoe bridging across
two hardwood cored floors at the forward end
of the keel.
Standing rigging in 1x19 stainless steel wire.
Main chain plate for cap shrouds, intermediates
and aft lowers incorporate a tip cup system with
under deck tie rods and stainless steel backing
plates mounted onto the bonded in chain plate
supports linking through the keel floor structure.
Forestay attachment is via the stainless stem
head fitting. Inner forestay chain plate is
positioned aft of the anchor locker bulkhead and
supported through a bonded in half bulkhead.
The backstay chain plate and running backstay
chain plates are mounted on the lazarette
bulkhead and through bolted with backing plates.
All sails are furling and controlled via Selden
hydraulic furling stays. The hydraulic control is
powered by a Lewmar Commander 200 power
pack, which provides hydraulic power to furl and
unfurl the yankee, staysail, and in mast furling
mainsail. Furling switches are located adjacent
to both port and starboard genoa sheet winches
for the yankee and staysail and mainsail-furling
switches are located adjacent to the cockpit
control line winch.
Backstay and boom vang are hydraulic and
supplied by Navtec with a remote panel and
pump fitted in the helm cockpit. Lewmar
Commander has a feed to the Navtec system to
provide some powered back up.

Mainsail is in mast furling and configured with fulllength
vertical battens to improve mainsail shape
and control and give the ability to support a
mainsail roach, a clew block is fitted and the clew
UV protected.
Yankee and Staysail: Manufactured polyester
sailcloth, with leech and foot lines, tell tails, UV
strip in white acrylic and sail bag.

Roel de Groot's interior for the Moody 66 sets a new standard for a long distance yacht. The raised saloon, spanning the full width of Bill Dixon's generous hull shape, is breathtaking. This is a space for relaxing, so a flat screen TV, DVD and surround-sound hi-fi are fitted as standard, while the large, fully equipped galley includes a refrigerator, deep freeze and wine cooler.

The private accommodation is equally impressive. Aft, the massive owner's stateroom has full en-suite facilities and a flat screen TV. Forwards are one double and one twin guest cabin, both with toilet and shower compartments, and the skipper's cabin with its own facilities. There is also a large and practical chart station, and a study area complete with foldaway sea berth.

Fine lacquered furniture is used throughout the interior, and owners have a choice of refined fabrics for the soft furnishings.
