Moody 346 - 1988 - £34,750
The Moody 346 is a well renowned centre cockpit family cruiser with production running until the middle 1990’s, the 346 was one of the most popular Moody designs of that era and now offers buyers excellent value for money on the second hand market
This is a very nicely presented and 'up-together' example of a FIN keeled Moody 346; this one fitted with in-mast reefing for the vertically battened mainsail and a self-feathering propeller

Tina Louise's accommodation spaces are in good order, with vinyl linings still good
throughout, overhead hatches lens' have been replaced and the solar powered ventilators - that can be switched - are permanently left on while the vessel is left closed up providing constant, forced ventilation.
Nicely spec'd from new, with the overhead hatch in the main saloon, teak and holly
soleboards in the main saloon and benefiting from Eberspacher diesel-fired hot air heating, this is the Moody 346 to view.
The Forward Cabin offers a conventional V-cabin, with in infilling cushion, cave side lockers underneath the side decks, with a hanging locker to starboard. The cockpit table fits neatly,folded to the port side of the cabin door. Light and ventilation by means of an overhead hatch with fixed 'Venturi' effect ventilator within.
Main Saloon; offering two midship berths for night passages, with L-shaped seating to the starboard side about a secure, double-leafed centreline table. A couple of the originally open cave lockers to the starboard side have been provided with smoked acrylic doors for closed lockers to supplement the two closed under-sidedeck lockers to the forward end.
The teak-veneered finish is in good order with no sign of mildew having been able to populate the wood grain.
A fixed Navigator's table, with chart stowage within is fitted to the forward bulkhead of the heads compartment, so faces aft with the navigator sitting on the aft end of the port settee berth but offers stowage for pilots and almanacs, with a Lowrance chart plotter located here too, together with an LCD Furuno radar on a swivelling bracket that enables the radar to be seen from the cockpit through the companionway.
The Heads Compartment, sensibly located at the foot of the companionway steps to the port side, features provision for oilskin hanging and is fitted with Jabsco toilet, hot and cold water shower with a solar-powered ventilator to minimise the chance of condensation accumulating and closed locker storage above and below hand basin level.
An L-shaped Galley is conveniently located to starboard of the companionway and extends aft beneath the starboard cockpit seat. The galley headroom in this area of a Moody 346 is a little restricted, but the generous and refrigerated top-opening cool box is located here, where the cook will naturally bend over to recover foodstuffs from within the 'fridge anyway.
Double stainless steel sinks, fitted within the forward peninsula are provided with a double mixer tap and separately filtered 'drinking' water faucet. The replacement Neptune gas cooker by Plastimo, when not required, may be covered by a convenient work surface panel that lends an air of tidy completeness to the galley.
Moving aft, one passes a hanging locker on the way to the genuinely independent Aft Cabin, which features a double berth to port side, seated changing to port and an individual handbasin with folding faucet and cover over - by way of 'bedside' table. Light and ventilation values are good, with fixed side windows to the coach roof, opening overhead hatch and opening portlights to either side of the transom.
Bought by the current and very experienced owners in 2002, this Moody 346 is very cleanly presented, with good fundamental maintenance work having been done to ensure a reliable and convenient cruising yacht with plenty of comfort for two to four people.
There is too much maintenance history to note it all comprehensively here, but in summary;
• Hull epoxy coated as a preventative measure in 2003 using four coats of Awlgrip
'Hull Guard' epoxy.
• Standing rigging replaced and new Furlex roller reefing system fitted June 2006.
• Engine fuel system overhauled 2007/08
• Engine's flexible mounts replaced.
• GRP heat resistant muffler box fitted to replace corroded stainless steel original,
together with a stainless exhaust elbow.
• Featherstream 3-bladed, self-feathering propeller fitted to reduce sailing drag.
• Keel studs, backing plates and fastening nuts replaced in 2007.
• All waterline inlet/outlet skin fittings and seacocks replaced 2009.
• Hatches and windows re-glazed.
• Harbourfast 35lbs plough-type anchor.
• Simpson Lawrence manual windlass with horizontal action gypsy.
• Antal self-tailing winch to handle the mainsail's operating lines.
• Original Lewmar 2-speed winches for the headsail sheets, supplemented with
rubber rope grippers.
• 2 off Lewmar 16 self-tailing winches to handle the headsail's reefing line and the
cruising chute's sheet.
• Hide covered steering wheel by Whitlock.

(warranty expired 12/2009).

• A 4-person liferaft by Avon in a GRP canister is stowed within a deck-mounted
stainless steel cradle inside the starboard pushpit, but was manufactured in 1988
and last serviced in 2008 and is presumed to be beyond serviceable life.

• 12V DC bilge pump with automatic switch (new May 2018).
• Manual bilge pump, operated from within the cockpit.
• Visiball, masthead-mounted radar reflector.

A Thorneycroft Type 80, 4 cylinder, naturally aspirated diesel rated at up to 30 BHP (max) is fitted within an acoustically insulated space beneath the cockpit's sole. Side access is very good, with a large removable hatch cover provided from within the walk-way to the aft cabin plus additional access through a removable panel from within the cockpit locker.
The engine drives a three-bladed, self-feathering 'Featherstream' propeller (by Darglow) through a conventional stainless steel shaft, with conventional packing gland sterntube seal.
The engine was last serviced in July 2018, with less than 15 hrs running since.
Twin 120 Amp/hr batteries are located within GRP boxes, with retaining plates over.
Charging is by means of the engine-driven alternator, supplemented by PV (solar) panel, plus a 240 AC battery charger by Cetrek, when connected to shore support.
A battery charge management unit by Adverc is fitted.
A shore support cable and 220-240V AC system is fitted and a galvanic isolator fitted to guard against shore-side grounding faults.
An immersion heater and double-gang 13 Amp sockets are fitted in the galley, main saloon and aft cabin.
Fuel (159 litres) is carried within a mild steel, painted fuel tank located to aft side of the cockpit locker.
The tank was emptied, removed from the vessel, cleaned and re-painted in 2008, with all fuel lines replaced at same time.
Water trap and Racor pre-filter installed in easy access location within the engine space.
182 litres (40 Imp. gallons) freshwater carried within tank beneath the main saloon berthing.
A masthead sloop on Selden spars, with a retrospectively fitted 'behind' mast reefing system by 'Easi-Reef' for the mainsail and Furlex system for the roller reefing headsail. A telescopic spinnaker pole, plus a lighter-weight bearing out spar are carried.

• Note: the original working Jib and Mainsail have been retained should anyone
want to return to conventional handling of sails on this particular Moody. The
working jib has been converted, with a bolt rope to enable its use on the Furlex
